The slides for this talk were generated using Gamma by the prompt “I want a presentation about the history of the calculus of variations that includes the story of Dido, the contributions of the Bernoullis and Newton, of Euler, Lagrange, Riemann, Weierstrass, Hilbert, Noether, and the direct method of Tonelli. I want details about the need for function spaces for the trace in regard to Hilbert’s mistake, about the additional Euler-Lagrange equations found by Noether, and about Tonelli’s direct method.” Further refinements were then made by prompting Gamma to modify slides. In this talk we use these slides and prompts as a basis for a parallel discussion about the important points of the Calculus of Variations and AI’s ability to understand relevance. A full list of refinement prompts is presented at the end.

Ricci flow is a tool for deforming a smooth manifold into a “standard” one within the same homeomorphism class. We introduce a new analogue of Ricci curvature for finite weighted graphs, based on the concept of effective resistance. The corresponding Ricci flow on graphs satisfies many properties shared by Ricci flow on manifolds. I will describe some of the ideas behind this definition, coming from arithmetic geometry, and demonstrate with some examples. I will also mention how Ricci flow on graphs can be applied to the real-world problem of community detection.

We start with some basic concepts in Riemannian geometry and discuss an important tool in the subject called the Ricci flow, which was introduced by Hamilton in 1982. Ricci flow can be viewed as a heat flow of the Riemannian metric which evolves in the direction of its Ricci curvature. Ricci soliton is a special solution to the Ricci flow and plays a crucial role in the singularity analysis of the flow. In the later part of the talk, we will cover some results which are based on my joint works with Man-Chun Lee and Luke Peachey.

In this talk, I would like to discuss the learning of a nonlinear operator for the scattering problem based on neural operator architectures. In most inverse scattering problems, the forward operator mapping from the refractive index to the far-field pattern is commonly used measurement. In many numerical methods for constructing the refractive index from the knowledge of the far-field pattern need to evaluate the forward operator, which involves solving PDEs and taking asymptotic. Such procedure is time consuming and not effective. It is therefore a favorable practice to construct a surrogate to replace this forward operator. Here we would like to demonstrate that, under certain conditions, the “parametric complexity” of neural scattering operators grows at most logarithmically with respect to the desired accuracy. This result makes the application of these neural operators rather promising in practice. This talk is based on joint works with Takashi Furuya.

In the first part of this talk, I will give an introduction to optimal transport (OT) theory, focusing on the Euclidean setting with the quadratic cost. This will include Kantorovich’s duality and Brenier’s theorem about OT maps. In the second part, I will give two structurally similar proofs of the classical isoperimetric inequality, one by the OT and the other by the ABP maximum principle.
